Side Effects Software, an industry leader in 3D animation and visual effects software, is proud to announce the immediate release of experimental Houdini Engine plug-ins for public preview. These plug-ins allow for deep integration of Houdini technology into Autodesk Maya and the Unity editor and will be available freely to CG artists during the experimental testing period.
The Houdini Engine now includes access to all of the new Houdini 13 features such as finite elements, enhanced Bullet, new particle tools and a feature-rich Find Shortest Path tool. The plug-ins were written with the recently updated Houdini Engine API 1.5 which adds texture baking, volume support, and more. Volume support is especially notable because it lets artists work with assets built using Pyro and Cloud FX tools in the Houdini Engine.
To access the Houdini Engine, artists can download the latest production build of Houdini or the free Houdini Apprentice Learning Edition and install the experimental plug-ins along with the Houdini interactive software. Houdini Digital Assets created in either Houdini or Apprentice can then be loaded into Maya and Unity using the Houdini Engine plug-ins. A growing library of Digital Assets for use in both Maya and Unity will be available at the Orbolt Smart 3D Asset Store

NVIDIA today announced NVIDIA® CUDA® 6, the latest version of the world's most pervasive parallel computing platform and programming model.
The CUDA 6 platform makes parallel programming easier than ever, enabling software developers to dramatically decrease the time and effort required to accelerate their scientific, engineering, enterprise and other applications with GPUs.
It offers new performance enhancements that enable developers to instantly accelerate applications up to 8X by simply replacing existing CPU-based libraries. Key features of CUDA 6 include:

In addition to the new features, the CUDA 6 platform offers a full suite of programming tools, GPU-accelerated math libraries, documentation and programming guides.
Version 6 of the CUDA Toolkit is expected to be available in early 2014. Members of the CUDA-GPU Computing Registered Developer Program will be notified when it is available for download.
Unity Technologies today released version 4.3 of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools. The important update includes the highly anticipated dedicated 2D development tools, huge additions to the Mecanim animation system, an upgrade to the re-written Umbra 3 occlusion culling, and much more.

Many users have been asking us for this plug-in for a long time. Today we're pleased the announce that the highly anticipated OctaneRender for Modo plug-in is coming soon and is being developed by Paul Kinnane (face_off on the forum), who has also developed the integrated OctaneRender plug-ins for Poser, ArchiCAD, Revit, Inventor and Rhino.
Modo users will be pleased to know that they will soon be able to experience the incredible speed and quality of OctaneRender from inside Modo, allowing an instantaneous photoreal preview of the scene while editing cameras, lights, materials and objects in the scene.
Some implementation details of the plug-in:
- All Octane rendertarget and material settings are item channels - so can be animated, linked, etc
- Modo meshes will be able to be tagged as "static" (ie. requiring an Octane scene refresh to update, but quick to load and render), or "live" (ie. updates as the Modo mesh is updated, but slightly slower to load and render)
- There will be a new tab for Modo materials which will allow the user to set the Octane material type and some specific attributes
- It may be possible to implement editing of Octane materials in the Modo Schematic editor
Our ecosystem of integrated plug-ins keeps expanding at an enormous rate with 15 announced plug-ins so far, of which 12 have been released (and there are still a few yet to be announced plug-ins that are in development). NVIDIA announced NVIDIA GRID technology is now available from Amazon Web Services (AWS) through its newly announced Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) G2 instance, delivering GPU acceleration to users running graphics-intensive applications and games in the cloud.
This expands the uses of cloud computing from storage, data processing and 2D applications to 3D, fully GPU-accelerated, interactive consumer and professional applications. With NVIDIA GRID GPUs, software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies can now build cloud-based offerings with extreme graphics performance for design, visualization, media creation, games and more.
AWS is offering an NVIDIA GRID GPU instance, known as the G2 instance, via its Amazon EC2 cloud, starting today.

Autodesk, Inc. customers will now be able to access Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Maya and Autodesk 3ds Max design tools via a web browser. For the first time ever, customers can access full-fledged 3D design, engineering and entertainment work in a browser without sacrificing performance, power or functionality.
Today’s announcement furthers the company’s ongoing strategy to provide access to its most popular tools from almost anywhere, anytime, regardless of device and without compromising performance. Continuing to build on Autodesk’s collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), OTOY and NVIDIA this new capability debuts as a tech preview and is an important expansion of the remote access capabilities provided through Autodesk Remote software. With this new capability, developers can access 90-day trials of Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Maya and Autodesk 3ds Max software.
In August, Autodesk Remote was made available to Subscription and rental plan customers worldwide. Remote allows users to drive Autodesk software installed on their primary computer from a remote PC or iPad, utilizing its full power in their 3D design and modeling work regardless of the device. The collaboration with AWS and OTOY expands on this capability to include access to Autodesk applications hosted in the cloud.
